Friends of ACSA is the fun, functions and fundraising arm of the AIDS Council of SA.
Our vision is á future free of HIV’ and we invite all people of goodwill to contribute to the important work we do in the community by becoming a ‘Friend.’
As a Friend you will receive a red ribbon (the international symbol of HIV and AIDS awareness) to show your support and commitment to our vision. You’ll also receive our e-Newsletter with up-to-date information on the activities and programs of the Council.
Friends of ACSA will be invited to special events held each year such as our ‘Not the Big Picture’ exhibition, AIDS Awareness Week activities and other social activities. We’ll also be bringing you special offers for our Friends on a range of products and services.
How do I become a Friend of ACSA?
Simply fill in the online registration form (coming soon) with your tax deductible donation of $50 for individuals and $250 for our corporate Friends.
You are also welcome to make an additional donation of any amount to be applied to a range of programs and activities that lie outside the core areas for which government funding is received.
Featured Projects
Our featured project for 2007/2008 financial year is the development of the AIDS Awareness Week Schools Art project.
The last 3 years, a number of local high schools and colleges have participated in an art competition where year 9, 10 and 11 students research the issues of HIV/AIDS and design a poster that portrays their individual perspectives on this global pandemic.
The winning posters are incorporated into a calendar which is then sold as a fundraising initiative.
We would like to expand this program, spreading the HIV/AIDS message to young people in our community.
Where does the money go?
With your tax deductible donation, you can choose how where your donation can be applied.
- Red Ribbon Bobby Goldsmith Fund
The Red Ribbon Bobby Goldsmith Fund is administered by ACSA to provide emergency relief for people living with HIV/AIDS. A high proportion of HIV positive people are living below the poverty line, and the ability to access small amounts for medications, food and household bills can make a substantial difference.
A program of People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) SA, the HIVE is a community food store that operates out of the Positive Living Centre. It provides a selection of non-perishable goods, at no charge, to HIV positive people who are experiencing financial hardship. The HIVE is operated by committed volunteers and open five days a week.
- Community Education, Information and Prevention
ACSA is increasingly involved in providing information about HIV/AIDS and related issues to health professionals, community groups and schools. A donation to this area contributes to oinformation resources including books for our Darling House Library, the development of printed materials for use in our education forums and additional capacity on our website. It also allows us to train speakers and develop age and culturally appropriate materials for all forums.
- Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Trans (GLBT) Health
ACSA is continually evolving especially with regards to general health issues for the GLBT community. These include programs related to mental health, drug and alcohol issues, youth services and ageing.
- General Programs and Capacity Building
If you are happy for your donation to go wherever the need is greatest, then a contribution to our general programs and capacity building will be of enormous assistance. We are building a ‘reserve’ of funds that can be applied to specific projects as they arise and also for capacity building in the sector, that may allow other related groups or activities to get off the ground.
